JEEP RALLY FOR LIFE (American Cancer Society/Relay for Life)

MEETS AND EXCEEDS GOALS for MAY 2, 2009

Jeepin for a Cure

·  Over 130 Jeeps at Erwin’s Chrysler/Jeep in Troy, OH

o   goal: more than the 115 of last year

·  $5,000 raised in one day in the middle of financial bad times! Oh, we do have expenses coming out of that money but we raised more than last year

o   goals: raise more than last year, $4,000,and more per person

·  2 people spoke to the Rally about cancer – the Am. Cancer Society president for Miami County (Gail McCreight) and the Miami County Patient Navigator (Robin Supinger). They informed us that folks at the Relay for Life find Saturday morning to be extra fun now that the Jeeps add so much (remember that some of them have been there all night and the track has someone walking at all times). Gail said they start spreading the word, “The Jeeps are coming, the Jeeps are coming!”

·  The Jeep rally to the fairgrounds announced to all observers that we are part of Relay for life because many Jeepers held their signs out their windows. Thank you!

o   goals: increase the amount of education about cancer prevention and availability of services in the state of Ohio; increase the interaction with Relay for Life

·  Children had their area to play, color, compete in races, and raffle items

o   goal: more for the kids to do

The rainy days last week gave us an opportunity to find amazing people who made the playground possible. The showstopper we faced was that we had no way to get a backhoe over the race track and we needed it to build the playground. The rain made the track soft and we had no way to prevent the backhoe making trenches in the track.

Along came a guy that John and I meet in a restaurant in Beavercreek last year (we both had our Jeeps in the parking lot and of course, we had to talk). Last Tuesday, Kyle Tirpack was sharing with us some of his pictures from Moab and when we started talking about the Rally situation he said, “Let me see what I can do.” Well, don’t tell Kyle you have a problem unless you want it solved!!! He used his semi/flat bed to pickup and deliver 6 steel plates to the fairgrounds. How does someone just get on the phone and find highway type steel plates? The Miami county fairgrounds had Scott Black and his backhoe available and we built a “bridge” across the race track that could handle any equipment plus we got to keep it down for the Jeeps. Kyle and Scott Black then reversed the process and tore down the playground and the plates on Saturday while the auction at Erwin’s was still going on. It was all done by 5:00. Wow! Of course, the clubs helped build and tear down the playground even with all the mud, rain, and cold. It is definitely “funner’ to ride thru the playground than to walk thru it dragging rocks around!

Larry Walker and the Poor Farmer’s campground are making it possible for this event to be a weekend, family fun time. Larry roasted a pig out there and many of us got to taste the great results on Saturday night. Next year we hope that more people come and enjoy the talk, food, campfire, and relaxing time. Profits from the pig roast also go to Relay for Life.

In July watch our web site for a link to our “Jeep Rally for Life” store. We will have t-shirts, jackets, hats, etc. available from a supplier who will direct ship your order and mail a check of the profits to the Relay monthly.

If you have companies who have donated items/time, let us know if you want them to receive a letter from us to provide evidence of their donation for tax purposes.

Feel free to give us your feedback about what to keep the same and how to improve this event
